As a Personal Trainer most people I know, including myself, drink alcohol. I understand the reasons for not cutting it out of your life completely and would never tell anyone to stop. However, you may wonder which the ‘healthiest’ drink to consume is whilst still staying relatively fit and healthy.
After all cider has apples in it so it must be relatively ok?
Well if we take a look at the carbohydrate content of some summer sups you may or may not be surprised. This information isn’t readily available on a wine list or as you wait your turn at the bar so I’ve put it together in a table below.
Alcohol itself has calories (9 per gram as opposed to 4 for carbohydrates), however they contain no nutritional goodness so they are effectively a waste. Therefore logically you would want to pick the drinks with the least carbohydrates, leaving the remaining calories to come from the alcohol.
The most bang for your buck? In my opinion I would opt for a vodka, fresh lime and soda. You will be hydrating and getting vitamin C into your body at the same time as the vodka. In terms of an alcoholic drink what more could you ask for!
